This Gallo-Gothic novel is less known than the films and hit musical it inspired. This is unfortunate since all subsequent versions lack the French urbanity, wit and lively characterizations of the original. The mysterious, homicidal Erik, who lives and lurks in the Paris Opera, becomes the mentor (or evil genius) of an improbably innocent (or merely stupid) aspiring soprano. Alexander Adams reads a graceful, uncredited translation, pulling back tastefully on the excessiveness while giving full value to the book's virtues. He makes this dated thriller thoroughly enjoyable for modern listeners. Y.R. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
