) offers this mystery-cum-romance, putting narrator Ruby Silverman in a perfect position to blow a starlet's cover. Ruby partially owns Les Sprogs, a chi-chi celeb-frequented baby store in London's Notting Hill—where she just happens to keep running into a cute American doctor who works at St. Luke's, the "Bentley of birth centers," where stars deliver babies with shamans at their bedsides. When Ruby just happens to glance into the dressing room at her store and spots a too-flat tummy on one of her supposedly pregnant celebrity customers, her antennae go up and the investigation begins. The absurd, good-humored mystery and a colorful array of secondary characters sets this bit of chick lit a notch higher than your usual girl-meets-doctor.

As the saccharine title implies, this latest offering from Margolis ("Original Cyn") is all about baby, albeit rich and fabulous baby. Single and 32 years old, Ruby Silverman is the owner of an exclusive London baby boutique where rich actresses and society types snap up Gucci baby shoes and all-terrain strollers. Two events take center stage: Ruby -s 50-ish mother announces she is pregnant and Ruby meets Sam, an American gynecologist. Ruby has the predictable qualms about dating a gynecologist and having a new brother or sister in her thirties, but adjusts with alacrity. Her composure does get ruffled, though, when she shockingly discovers how pregnant Hollywood actresses stay so thin. The plot threads (Sam the American gyno, too-thin pregnant actresses, friend-that-can -t-conceive, her pregnant mother) converge in ultra-obvious ways, but thankfully, the book stays light and fun throughout. Ruby Silverman's boutique caters to London mothers who treat their tots like the latest fashion accessories. And the type of celebrities whose pregnancy bumps miraculously disappear the minute they're holding their new bundles of joy. But when she accidentally catches a pregnant star sporting a prosthetic belly, she suspects something fishy is going on at London's best maternity ward. Just to make things interesting, Ruby has recently begun dating a handsome American doctor at that very hospital. Margolis deftly takes on pregnancy, relationships, body image, and medical ethics all in one hilarious and quick-paced package. Who knew baby brokering could be such a riot? This popular British author keeps turning out fun and witty novels that readers will grab off the shelves. Though her previous books have drawn many " Bridget Jones" comparisons, her writing may become the new standard for the chick-lit genre.
